Locating Tendons in Post-Tensioned Concrete

Written by Tendon | May 19, 2021 9:59:08 PM

Post-tensioning is a technique that strengthens concrete systems. The tendon cables are tensioned after the concrete is cast. This approach is often used in precast concrete structures such as parking garages, office buildings and others.

With post-tensioning, companies save money on material costs and labor. This method also provides better reinforcement and increases the integrity of structures.

There are times when post-tensioned concrete requires repairs, surveys and restoration. Because of this, it’s important to know where the tendons are located in the concrete. This protects the tendons from corrosion and damage. Overall, completing a site survey through scanning keeps buildings, and people, safe.

At Tendon Systems we strive to provide high quality engineering services. From concrete scanning to post-tensioning services, we are committed to excellence. Give us a call at (678) 835-1100.

Ground Penetrating Radar for Locating Tendons

Scanning is the first step to any kind of post-tensioned concrete maintenance, demolition or repair. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is the best way to non-invasively scan concrete. Ground Penetrating Radar uses radar pulses to survey a sub-surface. It is used in many applications. These include metals, asphalt and masonry, in addition to concrete.

Take a look at some of what GPR can detect:

  • Concrete thickness
  • Voids, such as air gaps and cracks
  • Electrical lines and wires
  • Tendon depth
  • Reinforcing steel
  • Fiber optic cables

GPR is an excellent concrete scanning method because it locates tendons deep in the concrete. Using the in-depth data that GPR provides, operators can even create cross-section views of the concrete. This data may also inform the plans of the project. For example, although a restoration may be planned, the details of the project may not be set in stone until after the GPR scan is complete.

Benefits of Scanning Post-Tensioned Concrete

Tendon damage, especially when caused by construction methods, is money down the drain. These cables can range from $7k to $10k each. Because they are stressed, even a small amount of damage can significantly affect the stability of the cable. It is important that concrete scanning is completed before any kind of concrete work.

There are immense benefits to scanning post-tensioned concrete before completing a construction project. Take a look:

  • Protect tendons from damage and corrosion
  • Save costly materials
  • Avoid safety issues
  • Save time and money
  • Prevent mistakes
  • Protect the integrity of the structure

Although some companies may use Ferroscan and other scanning methods, these cannot detect tendon depth and other important features. Improperly surveyed concrete could have disastrous effects on the structure as well as the cost and timeline of the project.

Scans are often completed during site surveys. In some cases, only a local scan may be necessary. For example, because coring only utilizes a small section of the concrete, then a local scan is enough to detect anything in the way. In other cases, the area may have to be scanned on a grid.

Restoring and Coring Post-Tensioned Concrete

Typically, scanning and coring go hand in hand. Many project managers require scanning for concrete coring services. Coring occurs when sections of concrete are removed. Concrete core drills are highly precise machines that require knowledgeable operators. One inaccuracy, such as a steel tendon in the way, could cause extreme damage.

Coring is completed to analyze the strength of existing concrete. Weak concrete may need to be reinforced or even demolished in some cases. Although GPR can detect certain features about concrete, a compressive strength test will determine just how secure a concrete structure is.

Restoration is another situation in which scanning is necessary. Restoring concrete may include the addition of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) or epoxy injections for cracks. Not only does scanning show project managers where tendons are located, they also inform about issues like cracks and gaps.

Concrete Scanning and Coring Service

It’s always important to choose the right partner to complete something as imperative as locating tendons in post-tensioned concrete. Even so, most companies only offer scanning services and not additional concrete services such as coring and restoration.

That’s where Tendon Systems comes in. Our team of licensed engineers are ready to provide both scanning and concrete services. Whether you need steel reinforcement or to test the integrity of a building, our team is here to help.

At Tendon Systems we provide all kinds of services:

  • Post-tensioning systems
  • Concrete restoration
  • Engineering services
  • Scanning and coring
  • Barrier cables
  • Slab on grade

Our offices are located in Atlanta, but we provide services all around the United States. As a client-centric team, we understand the importance of taking the time necessary to correctly complete a job.
