Expecting the Unexpected, Tackling Uniquely Challenging Projects

by Tendon, on Dec 15, 2022 7:00:00 AM

When completing major construction projects, challenges and disruptions are inevitable. But when Holder Construction faced unforeseeable remediation in the middle of their recent 750,000 square foot, 22-story glass high rise in Midtown Atlanta, the list of obstacles provided a unique challenge to their team.

They hired Tendon Systems to complete the engineering design, supply and installation of a state-of-the-art Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strengthening system and supporting beams.

Our team was faced with what appeared to be an insurmountable challenge on the Holder Construction remediation project. By going above and beyond, the Tendon Systems team overcame all obstacles to deliver timely, compliant and stunning workmanship, despite supply chain issues, a labor shortage and seemingly impossible time and data constraints.

A High-Stakes Project Requires an Expert Team

Holder Construction is one of the leading construction management companies in the country. They have earned their reputation by providing premier services to high-end clientele such as international airports and major corporations for over 60 years.

A recent project involved the construction of a 750,000-square-foot, 22-story glass high rise in Midtown Atlanta. Not just an anticipated addition to the Atlanta skyline, the building was also set to be the new headquarters of one of the country's leading transportation companies.

However, when the project faced remediation deep into construction, Holder Construction needed skilled support to navigate a series of unique challenges. In order to avoid hefty fines and potential revenue loss, the Tendon Systems team navigated labor shortages, an unprecedented supply chain crisis and schedule constraints to deliver the engineering design, supply and installation of a state-of-the-art Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strengthening system as well as additional concrete support beams.

In collaboration with in-house engineering teams and engineers at Uzun and Case, Tendon Systems went above and beyond to ensure efficient remediation services that helped Holder Construction complete the project without compromise.

Navigating Inevitable Project Challenges

The problems Holder Construction and Tendon Systems faced for this project were uniquely difficult to manage, yet our team navigated them effectively using their expertise and industry knowledge.

An Unprecedented Supply Chain Crisis

The project took place during the global COVID-19 pandemic and, as a result, faced an unprecedented supply chain crisis. Product shortages and delays meant that the team needed alternative and innovative solutions to remain on time and within budget.

In one instance, the team required a specialized epoxy that was not available due to supply chain issues. Our engineering team quickly provided equally effective and readily available products. This allowed for remediation to occur without altering the project timeline or pausing work for system redesigns.

A Growing Labor Shortage

Between 2020 and 2021, at a time when workers and contractors were overworked and anxious about contracting COVID-19, the rate of resignations increased by 20 percent. This left many employers desperate to find skilled employees.

The Holder Construction project faced many challenges, and project managers needed to find skilled laborers to help with their proposed solutions to avoid delays in the project. Therefore, in addition to proposing its own unique challenge, the labor shortage added a layer of complexity to all other challenges, making them more difficult to overcome.

Time Constraints and Risk of Penalties

In addition to the problems facing the Holder Construction project, both Holder Construction and Tendon Systems was under immense pressure to complete the project on deadline and within budget. Failing to do so would have resulted in fines and penalties for both companies.
